Have you ever lost a friend or a relationship due to how that person treated their pets or because…?

they were BYB or constantly purchased from puppy mills, knowing full well what they were supporting?

I have been friends with a woman for 7 years. In that time, she’s had no less than 10 dogs. She’ll have them one day and the next day she “gives them to a friend”, then she goes and buys more. As far as I know, she had only bred 2 litters, but she might have had more and didn’t tell me. Every dog is from a puppy mill. This is an educated, successful woman who has run her own business for over 15 years.

Her dogs aren’t treated very well, especially her Great Dane. She also has a Shih Tzu who is treated better. Nothing she is doing is illegal. The Great Dane is kept in a crate a lot and needs way more exercise and a higher quality food. Unfortunately, this isn’t against the law. When the dog pees indoors, they yell at her, but they don’t take either dog out nearly enough.

Although I like her as a person, I cannot respect her. She is also teaching her children this way of “caring” for dogs and they think it’s ok. I have discussed with her the possibility of giving up the dogs to a breed rescue, but she says she loves the dogs and if she ever “gets rid of them” she wants money for them.

I am wondering if you can shed some light if you have ever been in a similar situation.
Wow DJL – she has other great qualities. She has always been there when I needed her. I did not know about this dog trend in her life until several years into the friendship. I am trying my best (unsuccessfully) to get her to see what she is doing is wrong. I know she has kindness in her heart, I just felt I needed to reach her. I have tried for so long, I am considering giving up. It’s not an easy decision, but every time I leave her home, I am saddened by the lives her dogs lead. I am getting to the point where I don’t think she can be reached. It’s not easy to give up on a friend.
As far a I know, she’s never adopted from a shelter. She’s never mentioned it. I am fairly certain she only purchases puppies. She used to work in a vet’s office and she grew up on a farm. I believe she thinks she loves animals. She is sort of a lazy person. Her house has stunk from the time I met her, which is why I never realized the problem until recently. I only rarely (once every few years) even went to her house because it’s gross. She either came to my house or I would see her at a mutual friend’s house or met her somewhere else to hang out. I do believe the collector thing though, she is always getting different breeds, although she always has at least one shih tzu. She’s had an American Bulldog, a Great Dane, a GSD, a mini schnauzer, Mastiff, etc. I know that shortly before I met her, she had Rotti.
I meant lazy as far as cleaning and caring for her kids and pets. She is very good at her career.

I know she has a kind heart because she will pick up an injured wild animal and take it to someone who can help it.

I also forgot to mention she also has fish, snakes and turtles that live in filth and I don’t think they are fed enough. They live in the basement and I think they forget about them :(
